Google Sued Over Poor Traffic Conversions From Parked Domains
Wednesday, 16 July 2008

According to an article by Information Week, attorney Hal K. Levitte spent over $887.67 on his Google Adsense campaign to advertise his legal services and is now suing Google for placing $136.11 worth of those ads on parked domain pages. Out of the 202,528 impressions on parked domains, Levitte only received 668 clicks and zero conversions. Neither the article nor the suit addresses the fact that conversion rates can fluctuate based on any number of factors and do not depend entirely on the traffic source/quality. Landing page, ad copy, placement, timing, audience, product offering and many other factors play into conversion rates. Levitte’s conversion rates from the other $751.56 were not mentioned, neither were those derived from other traffic sources. However, by taking a brief scan of his website, LevitteInternational.com, one can assume his conversion rates may be consistently low... Read more:

It will be interesting to see how this new expiring domain sales progresses in a few weeks... Read more:

Why New TLDs Don't Matter
Tuesday, 08 July 2008

Lost amid the furor about ICANN's rule change that may (or may not) lead to a flood of TLDs is the uncomfortable fact that almost without exception, the new TLDs created since 2000 have been utter failures. Other than perhaps .cat and .mobi, they've missed their estimates of the number of registrations by orders of magnitude, and they haven't gotten mindshare in the target community. So what went wrong? ... Read more:

ICANN Blames Hack on Register.com
Tuesday, 08 July 2008

After several of ICANN’s domain names were hacked in June, ICANN has blamed the attack on Register.com. Although ICANN didn’t name the registrar explicitly, a WHOIS search shows that all the temporarily hacked domains - icann.com, icann.net, iana.com and iana-servers.com - were registered with Register.com.“The DNS redirect was a result of an attack on ICANN’s registrar’s systems,” said ICANN today in an article by The New York Times. “A full, confidential, security report from that registrar has since been provided to ICANN with respect to this attack.” ... The Montenegrin ccTLD, .me, is off to a great start with over 30,000 domain name applications to date. New Generic Top-Level Domains and Internet Standards
Monday, 07 July 2008
The recent decision by ICANN to start a new round of applications for new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) is launching a round of questions on the IETF side about its consequences. One possible issue may be with vanity gTLDs like apple, ebay etc. Some expect that every Fortune 1,000,000 company will apply for its own TLD. My guess is rather the Fortune 1,000 for a start, but this does change the nature of the issue, i.e. those companies may want to use email addresses like user@tld.
